As a native Floridian, from Miami to be exact, I have always had a
love for the beach. While I have a great affection for the beaches of
the Atlantic coast, I think there's definitely something to be said for
those on the Gulf shore. While many think of just the beaches of Alabama
and Pensacola, there are beaches that suit all types of needs and
tastes. Bay St. Louis in Mississippi is a great example of a place with a
lot of character and the perfect place for a day at the beach!
July 5th of 2014 saw my husband and I getting up very early to hit up the beach in Mississippi. Neither one of us had ever gone to this beach and we were quite excited, especially after discussing the destination with one of our friends who happens to come from one of the town's founding families! The drive from New Orleans was great and only took about an hour. Although we left early, by the time we arrived there was a lot going on the beach: people were finishing a race! This is a great beach for families with little ones since the waves were pretty much nonexistent on that gloriously beautiful day. It was also shallow water: we and our accompanying friends walked out a considerable distance and were still able to leisurely take a seat in the water. Once the race was completely over, the beach was not crowded at all. Families would trickle in but not enough to obnoxiously crowd out everyone like at so many other destinations. Main Street was quite interesting as well! It's lined up with a great assortment of little shops and places to grab a bite to eat.
While this seems to be more like a day trip, it can easily become a weekend or an extended trip depending on what you're looking to get out of your vacation. If you are looking for a cozy destination where you can be lazy, read a book, and walk down to the beach, then this is an ideal hideaway!
If you are ever visiting New Orleans, Bay St. Louis is worth a day trip to have a beach day while in the Gulf. Whether it's a couple looking to reconnect or a family in search of a fun day at the beach, Bay St. Louis is really rather marvelous! Although I absolutely encourage people to visit, I caution to do it so without causing the charming simplicity that makes it so alluring to disappear.
